Why would I need a power flush??
Power flushing an existing system can restore efficiency and prolong the life of your system. Magnetite sludge can reduce the performance of your system greatly; it also reduces the life of your boiler and system parts. Magnetite sludge is essentially rust inside your central heating system.
Corrosion will show itself in many ways:
- Black water or sludge comes from radiators
- Radiators have ‘cold spots’ along the bottom or in the middle.
- Regular venting of radiators as the corrosion process naturally creates hydrogen.
- Pump failures, almost annually, because the system is full of sludge.
- Increasing gas and bills because the ‘warm-up’ period is longer.
Power flushing is essential if you are spending a large sum of money upgrading to a new ‘High Efficiency Condensing Boiler’.
Sludge will reduce the performance of your system by between 5 and 15%.

Magnetite sludge
This is created by electrolysis. The components of a central heating system consist of steel, brass and copper. The differing metals react against each other and create a small electrical charge which breaks down the cathode in the system. This is generally the radiators in a central heating system. To prevent electrolysis in central heating systems, an additive is added to the water to prevent the electrolysis happening. This is done after the central heating system has been cleansed of sludge.
